I actually encountered Randy Peters,  self-published author of Vengeance in the North Woods, through LinkedIn. Randy Peters was looking for some marketing advice on his recently released book. After communicating with him and learning about his book, I ended up with another book review on my hands, which you can see here. I was impressed with what I had read and Mr. Peters’ story that I decided to interview him, which you can see below.

1. What sparked your interest in wolves?

I’ve always been an animal lover, but my focus on wolves started about ten years ago. My wife and I adopted a four or five week old puppy that had been left on the roadside in a cardboard box. The kennel owner wasn’t even sure what breed he was. I suspected he was a hybrid and as he grew my suspicions proved obvious. We named him Thor and never once regretted taking on the challenges of raising a wolf hybrid.

2. What did you learn as a result of your research for this book?

Pretty much all of my research came long before I decided to write a book. I gathered every bit of information I could find. I wanted to know what to expect and how best to care for Thor. I knew very little about wolves at the time, so I absorbed a mountain of facts. My favorite part of the learning experience was watching Thor develop his social skills with our other dogs and the cat. Wolves have a very complex social life and keep very tight bonds with their pack.

3. What is your favorite character in the book?

I don’t think I can pick just one. I’d have to say Thor and Athena both, because their devotion to family and each other is so reminiscent of my wife and I. They also know that one is no good without the other and are determined to stay together no matter what life throws at them.

4. What is the lesson readers should take away after reading this book?

Well. I didn’t write the book with any specific lesson in mind, but I suppose on looking back, readers could learn a little bit about the importance of family and keeping their own packs intact.

5. Have you ever encountered wolves in the wild?

Unfortunately, no. My wife used to watch one slip by the old trailer we used to live in quite often. The closest I ever got to him was following his tracks into the woods for about a half mile then losing all signs of him.

About the Book

Vengeance in the North Woods is the story told from a wolf’s perspective about a wolf pack that leaves their home after an altercation with the two-legged creatures with “killing sticks”. Their goal is to reach the “Land of the Buffalo”, a place where game is plentiful and man scarce. The story involves their triumphs and tribulations as they seek to make it through winter, death, and further encounters with man on their journey. Unlike the recently popular “werewolf fiction” out there, Randy Peter’s book focuses on the wolves with the same appreciation as Jack London does in the “White Fang”. With social rules, winter, and encounters with badgers, readers of this book will get to see just how complex a wolf’s life can really be. It is available on Amazon and several other sites including Barnes & Noble, Author House and Kobo Books in paperback and Kindle edition.
